Sentence Reduced For Amber Guyger, Will Do 10 Years In Prison
Amber Guyger, found guilty of murdering Botham Jean yesterday in Dallas, TX, was handed a reduced sentence of 10 years today.
Guyger killed Jean in September 2018, when she fired twice at him in his apartment. Her apartment was below his. She mistook the two apartments when arriving home from duty. She was still wearing her uniform. Later that month, she was fired from the police department.
Dissatisfaction over the reduced sentence provoked “No justice, no peace” chants from supporters of Jean. The case had been heavily scrutinized for its relevance to national headlines on police brutality and race relations.
In a heart-warming moment, Jean’s younger brother Brandt, a teenager, publicly forgave Guyger. “If you truly are sorry, I know I can speak for myself,” he said, “I forgive you.” He then asked if he could hug Guyger. After receiving approval, the two hugged. See a video of their embrace here.
Guyger will have to serve at least five years of the sentence before she is eligible for parole.
